understanding chmod

chmod 777 I'm trying to change the permissions of temp_dir to 777. Why are these commands not accomplishing that? I'm using Linux by the way.. chmod 777 -R .* ..[!.]* Bash has this command. shopt -s dotglob to also include hidden files in commands (shopt -u dotglob to disable that behaviour) if you want to stick to

pf777 com login, chmod 777 foldername will give read, write, and execute permissions for everyone. chmod 700 foldername will give read, write, and execute.
